How can teachers use text to speech for free?
Paste any text you wrote into the box above, pick a voice, slow it down a little for younger grades, generate it and download the MP3. That file plays anywhere: a learning management system, a QR code on a worksheet, a Google Slides deck or the classroom speaker. You do not need an account, and students never have to sign up for anything.
The biggest win is time. A second-grade teacher who records the same set of directions for four reading groups can make one clean audio file instead and reuse it all year. A middle school science teacher can give students a recorded lab safety briefing they can replay at home. Each conversion handles up to 2,000 characters, which covers about two pages of a typical worksheet.
Which classroom tasks work best with AI audio?
| Task | Grade band | Suggested setup |
|---|---|---|
| Audio directions for independent work | K–5 | Warm US English voice, speed slightly slower |
| Weekly spelling or vocabulary test | K–8 | Clear voice, a period after each word for a pause |
| Read-aloud of a short passage or poem | All grades | Storyteller or narrator style voice |
| Support for English language learners | All grades | Same text in English and in the student’s home language |
| Parent newsletter as audio | All grades | Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or other family languages |
| Test accommodations (read aloud) | 3–12 | Neutral voice, normal speed, one question per file |
Always follow your district’s accommodation rules and IEP or 504 plan wording when audio is used for testing.
How do I make a spelling test audio file?
This takes about five minutes and works for any word list.
- Write the scriptUse the pattern “Number one. Garden. The garden needs water. Garden.” The periods create natural pauses between parts.
- Pick a voiceFilter by English and United States, then preview two or three voices. Choose one with crisp consonants so “ship” and “chip” sound different.
- Slow it downSet speed a little below normal for K–3. For older students, normal speed is usually fine.
- Generate and downloadEnter the 5-digit code, press generate and download the MP3. For a 20-word list, split it into two parts if it runs past 2,000 characters.
- Share itUpload the MP3 to your LMS or link it from a QR code so absent students can take the test later.
Does text to speech help English learners and struggling readers?
Hearing a text while reading along supports decoding and fluency practice, and it lets students who read below grade level still access the content of a science or history lesson. For multilingual learners, you can generate the same directions in English and in Spanish and post both. Speechma covers 75+ languages and locales, including Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Tagalog, Hindi and Russian. Before you plan a unit around a less common language, preview the voices for it first.
For students with dyslexia, short audio clips paired with the printed page often work better than one long recording. Our dyslexia text to speech page has more ideas on pacing and formatting.
Tips for clear classroom audio
- Write numbers the way you want them read: “page twelve,” not “p. 12.”
- Use commas for short breathing pauses and semicolons for slightly longer ones.
- Keep each file to one task. Students replay short clips; they skip long ones.
- Name files clearly, such as Unit3-Lab-Directions.mp3, so you can find them next year.
- Pick one “class voice” and keep using it. Younger students like a familiar voice.
- For family messages, ask a native speaker on staff to check the translation before you generate audio.
Making a full unit of audio?
If you are turning a whole novel study guide or a long reading packet into audio, SpeechmaPRO.com takes 10,000 characters per conversion with no captcha and no ads. Schools that build their own learning apps can add voices through the Speechma API, with plans from $9/month.
