How can text to speech help with pronunciation?
Text to speech lets you hear exactly how any sentence sounds, as many times as you want, at the speed you need. Type the phrase in your target language, choose a voice from the right country (Mexican or Spain Spanish, Brazilian or European Portuguese, Canadian or France French), lower the speed and listen. Then repeat it out loud. That “listen and repeat” loop, called shadowing, is one of the most effective ways to improve an accent.
It works for teachers too. A Spanish teacher in Texas can create listening clips for a vocabulary list in minutes, and an ESL tutor can give students a model recording of every dialogue in the lesson.
A simple shadowing routine with Speechma
- Pick 5–10 sentencesChoose sentences you will actually use: ordering coffee, introducing yourself, asking for directions.
- Choose a native-accent voiceFilter by language and country. Stick with one accent while you are learning so your ear gets consistent input.
- Listen slow, then normalGenerate once at a slower speed to hear each sound, then again at normal speed to hear natural rhythm and linking.
- Shadow out loudPlay a sentence and speak along with it, a fraction of a second behind. Repeat until you can match the melody without reading.
- Record and compareRecord yourself on your phone, then compare it with the AI clip. You can also run your recording through Speech to Text; if it transcribes you correctly, your pronunciation is clear.

Practice scripts to paste in
Spanish: at a restaurant
Buenas tardes. Una mesa para dos, por favor. ¿Qué me recomienda? Voy a pedir los tacos al pastor y un agua de jamaica. La cuenta, por favor.
French: introducing yourself
Bonjour, je m’appelle Sarah. Je viens de Chicago, et j’apprends le français depuis six mois. Enchantée de faire votre connaissance.
English minimal pairs (for ESL learners)
Ship, sheep. Live, leave. Bat, bet. Full, fool. I live in a ship; I don’t leave on a sheep.
Put a comma or period between practice words so the voice pauses and you can repeat each one cleanly.
Tips for learners and teachers
- Make audio flashcards. Download each phrase as MP3 and add it to an Anki card, or use “download all” to get a whole vocabulary list as a ZIP.
- Listen on the go. Put your clips on your phone and replay them during your commute or workout.
- Teachers: build listening quizzes. Generate a clip per question and embed them in Google Slides, Google Forms or your LMS.
- Don’t rely on audio alone. Pair listening with a textbook, tutor or course; AI voices model pronunciation but do not correct you.
- Hear your own voice in another language. With Voice Cloning you can hear a sentence in your own voice in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese or Korean, a motivating target to aim for.
