Can you add a voiceover in Canva?
Yes. Canva lets you upload your own audio file and place it on the timeline of a video, presentation or animated social post. The simplest high-quality workflow is: write your script, turn it into speech with a free AI voice generator like Speechma, download the MP3, and upload it through Canva’s Uploads tab. Canva accepts AAC, M4A, MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV and WEBM audio, so Speechma’s MP3 works without conversion.
This approach is popular with US teachers building lesson videos, small business owners making Instagram promos and nonprofit staff turning a slide deck into a two-minute explainer. Because the voice is a file, you can reuse the same narration in a Canva video, a YouTube upload and a podcast clip.
How to add an AI voiceover in Canva, step by step
- Write one short script per pageCanva videos and presentations are built from pages, so write a few sentences for each one. Label them “Page 1,” “Page 2” and so on in your notes. At normal speed, 150 words is about one minute.
- Generate the voice in SpeechmaPaste the text into Speechma text to speech (up to 2,000 characters per conversion), choose a voice from the 1,700+ options and preview it. For a classroom video, a clear, mid-speed US or British voice works well.
- Shape the deliveryUse Voice Effects to adjust speed, pitch and volume. Use the Short, Medium or Long pause buttons for real pauses, commas for short breaths and an exclamation mark where you want an energetic beat.
- Download the MP3Enter the 5-digit security code, click Generate Audio and download the MP3. If you generated one file per page, “download all” saves them as a ZIP; unzip it before uploading.
- Upload the audio to CanvaIn the Canva editor, open the Uploads tab on the side panel, click Upload files and select your MP3 (or drag the file into the Uploads tab). Click the uploaded audio to add it to your design.
- Trim, fade and set volumeSelect the audio on the timeline. Drag the trim handles at the edges to shorten it, click the volume icon to set levels, and click Fade to add a fade in or out. Use Adjust from the track’s more menu to choose which part of the audio plays.
- Match page timing to the voiceSelect each page, click the clock icon in the toolbar and set the duration so the page stays on screen until its narration ends. Play the full design, then download as MP4 or present.

One long track or one file per page?
One file per page is the better choice for presentations and lesson videos. If you rearrange pages, the narration moves with them, and fixing a typo means regenerating a single short file. One long track is better for a fast social video where music and voice run continuously across cuts; generate it in a single pass (split at 2,000 characters if needed) and trim page lengths to match.
Example script for a real estate Instagram post, page 1: “Welcome to 42 Maple Street; a three-bedroom craftsman in the heart of Austin.” Page 2: “The kitchen was fully remodeled last spring, with quartz counters and a walk-in pantry.” Each page gets its own audio, so the agent can swap the photo order without re-recording anything.
Troubleshooting Canva voiceovers
- The audio cuts off early. The page is shorter than the narration. Use the clock icon to lengthen the page duration.
- The voice is too quiet next to the music. Lower the music track’s volume, or try Canva’s “Balance all” option in the volume control.
- My upload failed. Check the file is an MP3 and fully downloaded (not a .crdownload or partial file), then upload again.
- Canva won’t let me publish with audio. Canva runs copyright checks on uploaded music. Speechma voiceovers are your own generated audio, but any background song you add must be properly licensed.
- The script is longer than 2,000 characters. Split it by page, or use SpeechmaPRO.com for 10,000 characters per conversion with no captcha.
