Which voice cloning tools are really free?
Voice cloning takes a short recording of a real voice and lets an AI speak new text in that voice. It is the most requested AI voice feature, and the one most often locked behind a paywall. Before you upload your voice anywhere, check four things: is cloning on the free plan, can you use the result commercially, is your cloned voice private, and what happens to your sample.
We checked every competitor fact below on the company’s own pricing page in October 2026. Where a page did not say, we write “not stated” instead of guessing.

Pros and cons of each tool
- 1. Speechma: best free cloning without an account. Upload or link a 5 to 30 second clip, type up to 1,000 characters, choose one of 10 languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean) and a speed from 0.8x to 1.25x. Your sample is processed and not stored on our servers, and commercial use is included. Cons: no saved voice library (you upload the sample each time), a security code per generation, and 10 languages for cloning.
- 2. Fish Audio: most free cloning credits. The free tier lists enhanced voice cloning and 8,000 credits a month. Cons: the free plan lists 3 public voice slots and no private ones, and its pricing page contradicts itself on commercial use. The Plus plan is listed at $11 a month, billed annually.
- 3. Descript: best if you edit video and podcasts. Cloning sits inside a full audio and video editor. Cons: free cloning is marked “Limited”, with 60 media minutes a month and 100 one-time AI credits. Full custom voice clones are listed on the paid Hobbyist plan.
- 4. ElevenLabs: best paid upgrade path. A large voice platform with instant and professional cloning. Cons: its pricing page lists instant voice cloning and the commercial license from the paid Starter plan, not on free.
- 5. Speechify Studio: voices, not cloning, on free. The free plan offers 1,000+ stock voices and a voice changer. Cons: voice cloning is not listed on its pricing page, and the free plan lists no commercial usage rights.
Consent and ethics: the rules that matter most
A cloned voice can say anything, which is exactly why it needs care. Follow these rules on any tool:
- Clone only your own voice, or a voice whose owner gave you clear, informed permission for the specific use. Get it in writing for commercial work.
- No celebrities, politicians or public figures. Being famous is not consent. Tennessee’s ELVIS Act, signed in March 2024, added voice to the state’s likeness protections, and other states protect publicity rights too.
- Label realistic synthetic audio where it could be mistaken for a real recording. YouTube requires disclosure when AI makes a real person appear to say something they did not, but lists cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs as not needing disclosure.
- Never use a clone to deceive: no fake calls, fake endorsements or fake statements.
- Check privacy. Find out if a tool stores your sample or makes your cloned voice public. Speechma does not keep your sample after processing.

How to test a voice cloning tool fairly

- Use one test scriptInclude a question, a number and a name: “Can you believe it is already October? Call Dr. Patel at 555-0142 before Friday.”
- Listen for likeness and accentDoes it sound like you, and does it keep your accent and pace?
- Check the license and privacyConfirm commercial use and whether your clone is private before you publish.
